Set me free

Street art by L7m, in Brazil

Every day I start work by listening to Set me Free. When the birds start chirping I take a deep breath to start that part of my life.

I must confess that listening to it in relation to my work can feel at times a bit depressing, other times extremely sassy, but every single time liberating, as it should. It feels healthy somehow.

I remember I used to love looking at a blank wall when I was younger. My thoughts would take me far while I felt grounded. Now I know that in those minutes and hours I was growing.

Truly, we grow in the interlude of things. That is when we are the most paradoxical we can be, wanting so much and so little at the same time. Or wanting to not want.

Yoongi-ah, I believe that is why dreams and goals are an undeniable theme in every endeavour you take. From song lyrics to lives and interviews, going all the way to the only staple question in Suchwita, you are at war with this concept of “to dream or not to dream”. You have the answer to that, though. You have grown free into and out of the interlude.

And then, Park Jimin. Looking from what you have let us glimpse from the outside, he was the first one to learn how you needed to be loved. And both of you were better for it. When they announced Set me Free Pt. 2, my immediate and natural response was: “Of course”. Of course Jimin. Of course this song.

Where Set me Free breathes, Set me Free Pt. 2 shouts in anguish. The epitome of a paradox setting in, embracing different nuances. The birds of freedom meet the butterfly of strength in metamorphosis.

Where Set me Free is spring, Set me Free Pt. 2 is autumn.

Salvador Dalí, Venus Butterfly, 1947.
